US Tourist Visa Immigration

To visit the United States for tourism, you generally need a B-2 Visitor Visa. In most cases, the U.S. Embassy issues a combined B-1/B-2 visa, which covers both business (B-1) and pleasure (B-2).

For 2025, there are several critical updates regarding fees and appointment rules you should know.

1. The Application Process
  1. Form DS-160: Complete the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application. You will get a confirmation page with a barcode—keep this safe.

  2. Pay the Fee: The standard fee is $185 USD.

    • New for Late 2025: Starting October 1, 2025, a new $250 “Visa Integrity Fee” is expected to be introduced for non-immigrant visas to address overstays (this fee is generally refundable upon your departure from the U.S. if you comply with visa terms).

  3. Schedule Interview: Create an account on the official U.S. Visa Appointment Service website for your country to book your interview and biometrics (fingerprinting).

  4. Attend Interview: A consular officer will interview you to determine your eligibility.

2. Required Documents for 2025
  • Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay.

  • DS-160 Confirmation: Must have the barcode.

    • Crucial Rule: As of May 2025, the DS-160 number on your confirmation page must exactly match the number used to book your appointment, or you will be turned away.

  • Photo: One 2×2 inch (5×5 cm) color photo taken within the last 6 months (no eyeglasses).

  • Proof of Ties: Evidence that you will return home (e.g., job contract, property deeds, family enrollment).

  • Financial Proof: Bank statements or pay stubs showing you can afford the trip.

3. Interview Wait Times

Wait times for appointments have become a major factor in 2025. They vary wildly by location:

  • Canada: Some of the longest waits globally (e.g., Toronto can be 17+ months, Calgary up to 24 months).

  • India: Average waits are roughly 3–4 months in Mumbai, but longer in other cities.

  • Europe/Asia: Often faster, with some cities like Singapore or Bangkok offering slots within 2 weeks to 2 months.

4. B-1 vs. B-2: What can you do?
Visa TypeAllowed Activities
B-1 (Business)Consult with associates, attend conferences, negotiate contracts, settle estates.
B-2 (Tourism)Vacation, visit friends/family, medical treatment, attend social events/amateur contests.
BothIn 2025, holders can also apply for jobs and attend interviews while on B-1/B-2 status, though they cannot start work until they change to a work visa.
